Top Rope Climbing (TRC) gives students from year 5-12* the opportunity to work as climbers and in belay teams. TRC requires participants to take on complex climbing challenges.  *Note. Students from other year levels eg. multi aged classes may participate dependent on ability, size, parental permission

Student experiences may include:

  • TRC on Daradgee’s Indoor Climbing Wall (ICW)
  • Supporting others in climber/belay teams to learn techniques and strategies eg. use of harnesses, ropes, belay anchors
  • Working in belay teams to support climbers eg. roles of 2nd and 3rd belays helping all climbers ascend the ICW
  • Learning from experiences of unfamiliar physical challenges eg. belays supporting climber to safely ascend and descend climbing wall
  • Improving participation and enjoyment through climbing eg. learning new climbing skills, supporting climbers with advice, encouraging others to overcome fears
  • Focusing on identifying and developing effective leadership skills and strategies eg. building teamwork, organisation, cooperation and communication
  • Debriefing on student’s experiences including benefits of working together to help others succeed, overcoming fear, supporting others

Duration: Approx. 2-3 hours

Comments:
TRC is conducted in our 9 x 15m ICW shed. This is fully shaded and well ventilated providing a safe all weather option for up approximately 30 students.
TRC is high level climbing to 6m and involves students taking turns to climb and to support others as a part of a belay team.

All adults and students use and wear safety equipment including helmets, harnesses, climbing ropes and anchor points. This equipment and the DEEC staff leading TRC are fully qualified to deliver TRC.

TRC allows individuals to set their own climbing challenges. It can have great outcomes for students overcoming personal challenges.
Debriefing the session is important in identifying how successfully individuals and teams worked together eg. belay team efficiency, management of fear, fatigue.

The ICW has sand as soft fall material.
