If I were a Farmer - 2014

The Daradgee EEC’s 2014 Writers and Illustrators Camp supports student learning across the three strands of the Australian Curriculum – English:  Language, Literature and Literacy.

In addition, the General Capabilities of Literacy, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Behaviour and Intercultural Understanding and the Cross Curriculum Priority of Sustainability are embedded in the planned learning experiences that feature in the camp program.students busy painting on paper

2014 is the International Year of Family Farming and students will explore this through the theme of “If I were a farmer”. Prior to attending the camp, students will be required to complete a number of research tasks including gathering relevant perspectives from local farmers, analysing language choices and the use of visuals in children’s picture books and becoming familiar with the authors in residence, Elizabeth Honey and Alison Lester.

The program has been organised around the explicit teaching model of ‘I do’, ‘We do’, ‘You do’.  The camp will begin with the authors in residence sharing their stories and lives as both authors and farmers. They will teach the students the skills and knowledge required to create a quality piece of literature.  Students will then be actively engaged in a range of carefully scaffolded activities that will extend their writing and illustrating skills.  By the end of the camp, students will have written, illustrated, edited and published their own children’s picture book which can be shared with their school community.

2012

The Daradgee EEC’s 2012 Writers’ and Illustrators’ Camp supported student learning across the three strands of the Australian Curriculum – English:  Language, Literature and Literacy.  In addition, the General Capabilities of Literacy, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Behaviour and Intercultural Understanding and the Cross Curriculum Priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures and Sustainability were embedded in the planned learning experiences that featured in the camp program.

The program was organised around the explicit teaching model of ‘I do’, ‘We do’, ‘You do’.  On the first day of the camp the role of Alison Lester and Elizabeth Honey, the featured authors, was to share their stories, their lives as authors and the many and varied skills they draw on in order to create a piece of literature.  The role of the students was to listen and to learn as Alison and Elizabeth modelled their writing processes.  On the second day of the camp, the guest authors and participants worked together through a range of carefully scaffolded activities that lead towards the development of participants’ writing and illustrating skills.  The third and fourth days of the camp saw the participants busily writing and illustrating their own piece of literature with the adults present, including Alison and Elizabeth, in the role of support people.
